Baby Brother

Chris - 1970 - 8 months old

I wanted a little sister
But it wasn’t meant to be
Instead I got a brother
Who means so much to me

It was a pleasant day in April
I was playing outside that day
When I got home at lunch time
There was my Uncle Dave!

I remember he served us lunch
Canned macaroni and cheese
It was really rather disgusting
But I ate it just to please

We wanted to see our mother
And see our brother too
So Dad took us to the hospital
What else was he to do?

We sat in the waiting room waiting
It seemed like a long long time
Mom came out and talked to Dad
But she forgot we were alive!

Then Mom was ready to come home
So to the hospital we would go
We waited by the hospital doors
And there he was – lo and behold

It was the first time I saw my brother
He was sitting up on her knee
He was screaming his head right off
He certainly did not look pleased

My baby brother was different
Different than Leonard and I
He had mess of short dark hair
And two big chocolate eyes

My baby brother had no name
At least for a couple of weeks
I came up with Christopher Warren
And my parents thought that was sweet

I love my baby brother
He's mine to keep forever
Even though we're all grown up
Our bond will not be severed

Little Brother

My brother and I in 1967

In Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland
I was just a little wee girl
When my little brother Leonard
Was born during a winter’s storm

Even though I was very little
I just knew it in my heart
My brother would be my best friend
Right from the very start

I used to love to look at him
And hold his little hand
I was right there beside him
When he tried to stand

I remember when we were small
Mom and Dad were still asleep
We’d sneak downstairs to watch TV
Quietly with little padded feet

We waited for what seemed for hours
For Bugs Bunny cartoons to start
Then we’d giggle and laugh out loud
With innocent smiles in our hearts

I love my little brother
He's mine to keep forever
Even now we're all grown up
Our bond will not be severed

The Lamb

She is exactly what a Nana should be
Loving and gentle to a little me
She is intuitive to my every need
To keep my little soul comfy-cozy

She’s the shepherd that teaches love
With the help of God’s hand above
She is the protector of my little soul
To keep me safe, to keep me whole

She wipes my nose and wipes my tears
She holds me tight, lest I should I fear
She’s tender loving to the touch
She is surely a wonderful crutch

She knows what to do, she has the style
She sings to me and watches me smile
Read me a story, or simply watch TV
It doesn’t matter when she’s with me

She is the protector of all little souls
To love and honour and console
She is God’s gate keeper of the innocent child
She is an angel with wings of rose petals wild

She would give you her heart if she could
Give you the clothes off her back she would
You could call her generous to a fault
With all the love she offers from her inner vault

She is quite remarkable, my Nana Farrell
Fiercely independent with nice apparell
She has given me the greatest gift
I have the Nana knowledge when I take her shift
